Contractor Rating Guide

HOL has created an on-line version of the Handyman Binder that used to be in the Clubhouse. We’re now calling it the Contractor Rating Guide. Below is a Terms of Service with a link to the guide, some general information you might find helpful when choosing a contractor, and a form you can fill out to add a review of your own. Although this guide is intended to be an on-line document, a binder with a hard copy of each listed review, along with a summary table, will be periodically updated and kept in the library, like the Handyman Binder that some residents were used to.

For security reasons, this guide is set up as an access-controlled Google doc that is restricted to residents who have an email listed in the Park directory. Residents whose email is a gmail address can simply click on the link below to access the guide…you may be prompted for your Google email and password if you are logged out of your account. Residents with non-gmail email addresses have received an email-based link to the guide’s summary table. If you would like to be able to use the full functionality of the guide, please consider creating a google account with an “@gmail.com” email address, and sending that info to marinvalley.net@gmail.com. Here is a link to help you do that: https://accounts.google.com/signup/v2/webcreateaccount?hl=en&flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=SignUp

There are three categories of information on this page. Clicking on the green tabs below will bring you information on that topic. The dark green green tab is the “active one”, with information for that category shown underneath; clicking on one of the lighter green tabs will convert it to “active” and then show the information for that category instead. We’re very interested in your thoughts, questions, and comments as you begin to use this guide. Please email marinvalley.net@gmail.com with any suggestions.

When you click on this link, it will open a window that looks like the image on the left. At the top of that window is a option titled “Open with”. Clicking on that spot will show you an option to open this link with “Google Docs” itself. If you then choose that option, the summary table will open in Google docs, which you may find more visually appealing.

Some other resources you might consider when using this guide, or hiring a contractor to do work on your home in the Park.

California’s  Department of Consumer Affairs has a Contractor License Board that puts out a variety of helpful publications. Their Guides and Publications page lists a number of these, including  a general Before Hiring A Contractor brochure,  What Seniors Should Know Before You Hire a Contractor, and a Construction Project Checklist . This includes a reference to the California Business Code, Chapter 9 requirement that home improvement projects over $500 use a licensed contractor.

HCD’s Modifying a Mobilehome or Manufactured Home: webpage covers other requirements to consider when doing a construction project on your home, including when a permit is needed.

Also, be aware that it may become your personal liability If you hire a contractor who is not insured,

Please help us make this guide better … today there are about 50 contractors listed in the guide; with your help that number can grow significantly. Please consider adding a review for a contractor you have recently used. The best way to add a review is to do it over the phone with one of the Contractor Rating Guide team members. It’s quick (less than 10 minutes), and we’ve found it to be the easiest, most accurate way to add reviews. To do an over the phone review, just call Inga Grace (415.884.9088) Elizabeth Lev (414.345.0725), or David Tetta (206.601.3040).

If, for some reason, you can’t do your review over the phone, you can copy and paste the text below and  email to marinvalley.net@gmail.com.  Just fill in the information for each of the categories listed. Items in bold are required in order for us to put your review in the Contractors Rating Guide. Put “Review for (Name of Contractor)” in the Subject line, and send to: marinvalley.net@gmail.com. It should be included within a few days of when you submit it, although we might need to contact you first. Please only report facts and express your opinions. We ask you NOT to make recommendations, just inform others of your  experience. All submitted content may be edited to comply with this procedure. Bolded items need to be completed in order to include your review in the guide; the other items are helpful but not required. Please recognize that by submitting this information you may be contacted by other residents, regardless of whether or not you provide your phone or email below. Lastly, if you would be willing to be a referral for one of the alternative contractors who work in the park, please let us know that as well. In particular, we are looking for folks who would give referrals for the Caregiver and Pet Support categories. And many thanks to those of you who have already contributed reviews!

Copy and past the text below, and email the completed info to: marinvalley.net@gmail.com (Items in Bold must be completed)
